Anyone seen any good movies lately?
The movie of the summer has certainly sparked a lot of creative and analytical content. Emily Wilson (re)lit the fires with her review of the film. Zhongsu from Boston College guided us out of the (or Polyphemus’) cave in her interview with Nolan. The most recent translator to tackle Homer’s words, Daniel Mendelsohn, had several things to add to the conversation. Robert Pattinson’s character has become the internet’s biggest meme, from his now iconic line to his less than impressive reactions, closely followed by Jon Bernthal’s overall presence in the movie. Even the previews leading up to the film have their own cult-meme following.
But, as a nod to our once-upon-a-time fellow state brother, Matt Damon, the MCA wants to hear what our true fellow Maine-ahs have to say about Nolan’s The Odyssey. Fill out this form by September 12th to share your thoughts on the film in a few sentences or a short paragraph. They will be posted the following week.
In other cinematic news: for fans of archaeology and Amy Poehler, the new Peacock series Dig will be premiering in November. While there is no release date set, the live-action Assassin’s Creed series has started filming in Rome. And they (the Muses?) are saying that an animated film adaptation of Epic: The Musical is in the process of being developed.
While Nolan’s past appears to have to die to make way for the future, in our world, the past might very well show up in your pocket change, your backyard, or from the depths of Poseidon himself. Even the heavens shower remnants from the myths of old, and the dead tell us tales of bronze. . . and mice and men (where is the meme cult for this?).
Homer is everywhere right now, but the voices of many other ancient authors are also still resonating. Ovid’s 2000 year old scripta somberly reflects current issues. I personally am reminded of Pliny’s observations on the (in)efficacy of public works projects as my car’s axles are strained and my commute lengthened by road pavements that will have lost any semblance of usefulness by October. But I suppose I should be thankful that at least the Statue of Liberty isn’t under my tires.
