Classics in the News

A small collection of events and happenings across Maine, New England, and the world that connect us to the past.

The MCA is looking forward to the Fall Meeting tomorrow, hosted by the wonderful Classical and Medieval Studies Department at Bates College.

For any Maine AP Latin instructors out there, Bolchazy-Carducci is hosting a webinar on the Pliny selections for the updated AP Latin exam. The event will be held on November 12th, 6pm and led by Jaqueline Carlon (retired professor from UMass Boston). Registration can be found here.

Towards the end of the month, take some time and make your way to your local movie theater to catch Gladiator II. Taking place 20 years after the first movie, Gladiator II will include such historical figures as Macrinus, Caracalla, and Geta. I am sure Caracalla is rolling over in his grave as Geta continues to defy his damnatio memoriae. The movie is set to release on November 22nd.

In more recent news, does someone really have to do some of Alexander the Great’s laundry? Paleoanthropologist Antonis Bartsiokas is pushing back on the decades-held theory that one of the Vergina tombs in northern Greece is that of Alexander the Great’s father, Philip II of Macedon. Bartsiokas, arguing against the original archaeologist Manolis Andronicos, is claiming that Alexander’s half brother along with some of Alexander’s own possessions is buried in the tomb. Among these possessions is purple tunic. Check out all the details here.

Looking ahead beyond November, the beloved libertas Decembrī is almost upon us and Caius Brewery in Branford, CT is encouraging lovers of beer to celebrate it. On December 14th, Caius Brewery is hosting a Saturnalia event from 2-8pm. Does the MCA hear road trip? It would be educational. . .

As indicated by their name, Caius Brewery connects the beer world to the ancient Greco-Roman world. Read more about their story here.
